week 12

Bula Vinaka!! 

Well my first week in Fiji has definitely been a crazy week but a very good week! My area is called the burewai area...We cover three villages sai oko, burewai, and nasautoka...Every area is awesome but the kids in nasautoka are awesome! So driving a stick when i dont know how and on the left side of road was very interesting! But its ok... the car and us are in one piece! You definitely learn alot on the mission! haha Now I can drive a stick shift! haha Im pretty comfortable with it now but man these roads that i drive on are sketch! Dad there is no shot in this life or the life after that you would allow the truck on these roads! haha they are pure dirt and up and down mountains. The description is very accurate....very poor. We have used candle light and we sleep in two churches which are houses of members. They are not big at all and our flat where we are suppose to be at, is about the size of our kitchen...with 4 elders in it..but we only stay there twice a week cuz we travel to three different areas. I have used one real shower, a hose, and a pvc pipe (picture) to shower haha its awesome..Food has actually been pretty good. I've been suprised. We ate shrimp right out of the ocean. ha we had to take the legs and head off and what not.I have a video but its too big. We crossed a river on a bilibili which is a bamboo raft type thing. We stand on it and cross it ha its sweet...All the teenage girls here call me prince william haha its funny. I dont know why but its funny! The kids is nasautoka are awesome. They follow us everywhere, sleep with us, and just have fun. Its awesome...All the babies just stare at me and wonder why a white guy is here. haha its awesome. Church is definitely different here. We started almost 45 minutes late and we had preisthood with the YW. We teach sunday school too. We had 3 baptisms Saturday and I baptized one of them and also did the confirmation for one(english). I didnt know i was doing the confirmation until 5 seconds before. I was nervous!! But you learn by doing, right? It was a really cool experience though. Its crazy people don't know their birthdays and some dont know their last name here. Its sad. We have 4 baptism interviews scheduled for next week so the work is doing really well in our area right now. This family, the Inkoes, really impressed me the first time i met them. They have had all the lessons and go to church every week and hold a FHE every week and they are just waiting for a divorce to get settled then they will be baptized. Its awesome...the dad was telling me about how it happened and all and the man has great faith and loves his family! The language is frustrating, but sometimes I can understand but others just talk way too fast!! Its frustrating but just gotta be patient and continue to work..My area is pure Fijian and people say this is the best place to start for the language. Things are great though. Im in the bush and getting dirty and just experiencing all different kinds of things ha i love it. Tell everyone I say hi too! Elder key is really good...we get a long very well. He's from Samoa and been out just a little over a year. He is really good in Fijian so i just try to listen as much as i can and try to pick up on things..Alright well hope all is well!! Love you all!! Miss you!! But i love Fiji! Time to get back to work!

Surprise email from Elder Hansen!!!!

Bula family!!

 Well Im here safe and sound! The past two days, we have stayed with the aps in Suva and just did a few things and chilled,..Pres and Sister Klinlger are really cool!!  She baked us the best cookies ever!! I got my sulus! hahaha i love it....The ride from Nadi to Suva was terrible  It was soo long! Right when we got there we went and played basketball ha it was awesome...Yesterday we went on splits and we taught this 10 year old girl who was the smartest girl ever!  She was reading the Book of Abraham. It was nuts!!!  I dont know even know what to say!  Fiji is awesome!! My new comp is from Samoa Elder Key and our area is called Burewai...aka "The bush". We are taking a hike to a village today and sleeping in the church...sound familiar??  I'll be sure to take lots of pics dont worry!  Oh yeah and there is not one bit of englsih in our area...its going to be really hard but really good, everyone says that this is the place you want to start at cuz all there is is Fijian so I'll be working hard!  I dont know even know what to say haha its crazy here, definitely different but its good.  So supposedly I am baptizing someone Saturday too in Fijian! haha quick start huh!? Also, we are in town right now but in a bit we have a 3 hour drive to our area and my comp cant drive and its a stick which I'm not very good at and they drive on the left side of road here and i have to drive to our area. hahha not gonna lie kinda nervous but I'll get it done! Man Fiji is different and it's what I expected it to be.  I'ts awesome tho i cant wait.I'm definitely going to have a lot of adventures. It's my third day and I'm already having a ton...Oh yeah during our lesson yesterday  we heard some kid gettin beat too. Thats normal though here just kind of caught me off guard. It's gorgeous here tho for sure, both poor and nice areas, its crazy. Next week I'll email some pics. But everything is going good and time to work! Love you all and I'm in good hands! haha oh yeah guess who is my ZL?? elder Hillyard! Well I am finally leaving!!! haha its very nice! i started to clean my room and get things to send home today...Ill send it tomorrow. There is a place where Abbi can pick up on Thursday...Post mart 2250 N. university parkway #48  801-373-5900 so that is the best way to do it! Things went well this week. We got released from ZLs and 2 tongans are now the ZLs. One of the branch presidency counselors said that we were just as good if not the best he has seen since hes been at the MTC so that was really cool to hear. I feel like I did my job very well....I got my flight plans! We leave Provo at 130 ad our flight leaves at 5, then arrive into LA at 6 then leave LA at 1130 and arrive in Fiji at 5 in the morning.  I can say i will never experience July 17, 2011 in my life hahaha we skip that day.   When should i call you? Both times or what?  So we sang in sacrament the Army of Helaman in Fijian. It is not a translated song in Fijian so we translated it ourselves with a little help of a true Fijian. It was really hard but really cool! I memorized D&C 4 today. I found something from May 5th and the goal was to memorize it. haha it took me 10 weeks but i did it! So we had 3 elders in our zone go home this week, it was weird. The longest one that was here was 2 weeks but oh well hopefully they will come back out. So we were doing our checkout things and we watched some family history video and next thing I saw was VAL!!! hahaha i started freakin out haha it was sweet! If you could tell her that, it would be nice..It was really cool though. we are helping the new Fijians alot.  Im close to two of them that are really cool. They always come to me for help, so its good. I'll talk to you guys Saturday. I have 18 emails today so i gotta hurry but dont worry you guys were first! :) Well love you all! Talk to you soon!

week 9

What up family!!?? Things are awesome! I love being a missionary! Im defintely getting ready to go soon!! No word on the visa yet but so far still the 16th we are suppose to leave. Sister fox and her primary class wrote me this week. It was sweet! So im just goin down my planner on things to write so it will seem really random haha sorry! Well first off, I learned that public places dont have toilet paper and you usually carry some in your backpack hahaha i love it!! Just a funny translation, waqavuka is how you say airplane and in englsih it means flying boat haha alot of words are like that. Also, Fiji doesn't have transfers. i dont know how it works but its very different from normal missions. 4th of july!! It was so fun!! We got to watch the fireworks outside and President Brown(MTC) let us stay out til like 1130 to watch them. It was crazy night! Before we had a small devotional talking about the holiday and what not and then guys in kilts came out playing the bagpipes to Praise the Man. It was sweet!! Then missionaries walked down the bleaches with their home country flag it was really cool. I filmed it so you can see it a little bit. Sunday was an awesome Sunday! We sang with the haitian creole elders that left this week.. It was Josephs Smiths First Prayer to the tune of Come Thou Fount...OMG!!! It sounded sooo good!!! Its such a good combination! So we sang in Englsih and haitian creole..I wish we could have filmed it, it was awesome. District meeting, Elder Moaalii and I taught about the Atonement. It was a very good meeting! Spirit was very strong and definitely gained a greater testimony of the atonement. Devotional Tuesday was really good too...Jenny Oaks Baker (Dallin H Oaks) daughter,..famous violinist,  she just played, it was awesome! I filmed a couple songs of that. Last song was her 3 daughters playing I am a Child of God. Piano, violin, and cello.  Yeah guess how old they were? 6,8,10!!! I felt useless after that!! It was incredible!! TRC was really good too this week. We are doing really well teaching in Fijian right now.. The investigator said our Fijian is really good and teaching was really good. I used 3 nephi 13:31-33 about tithing and he told me its how the power of the scriptures work and that they are true because he has never been taught that scripture or used it as a missionary for tithing so it was really cool.. Last night, we were just suppose to read with an inactive member and the spirit turned it into a legit lesson.  It was really cool!! Reading is getting going again..Ive been studying the last two lessons lately but i started the B.O.M. again yesterday.  It took me 1 hour to do 4 chapters.  Ive just been really trying to break it down and learn. I learned alot more in those 4 chapters. Our teacher told us something that I have never thought of, we say we will change peoples lives but thats not all, we change their eternity and their families eternity. It was crazy to think about that. Im still having fun haha.  On Monday we got up at 4, today at 3 and tomorrow at 4 to drop of the haitians. It sucks.  We came in here together and we have gotten really close so its kinda tough but its all good. Im reading the Book of Mormon in Fijian before this and i could undertstand everyhting haha its awesome! Gift of Tongues is real! Well love you all keep the faith!!
